Dermatology is a branch of medicine concerned with the skin, hair and nails and related diseases and a speciality we cover at London Bridge Hospital Outpatients.

Our consultants, from London’s top teaching hospitals, can quickly diagnose and effectively treat a wide range of skin-related diseases and conditions, right in the heart of the city. Conditions we cover include:

  • Acne
  • Age-related deterioration
  • Eczema
  • Freckles
  • Moles
  • Psoriasis – a skin condition involving red, flaky, crusty patches of skin being covered with silvery scales
  • Skin lesions
  • Warts

A key area of dermatology we treat is acne, a common skin disorder that usually starts around puberty and can cause discomfort. In most cases, it is associated with the changes in body hormones that occur during adolescence, but can last late into adult life.

More rarely, an acne reaction may be related to an external agent, such as medication or a work-related chemical. Very few specialists today believe that acne is caused by diet or a food allergy. Patients may need assessment by a specialist to ensure they do not have a major hormonal problem (for example, polycystic ovaries in women).

The removal of moles is another key service our dermatology specialists provide. Moles are collections of pigment cells (melanocytes) in the skin, usually slightly raised and brown in colour, but they can be pink or flesh-coloured.

Most individuals with European skin will have some moles. It is also common to form new moles up until the age of about 25 years. The majority of moles are entirely harmless (benign), but can become malignant. In this case the mole becomes a malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer.
